Abbash da Mery – Historic Home with Hot Tub in the Heart of Ostuni
Ostuni, SalentoIn the heart of Ostuni lies a small house where time has left traces of real life. For years, everyone would say, “I’m going down to Mery’s”—in dialect, “abbash da Mery.” It wasn’t just a house: it was our grandmother’s haberdashery, a place where people came for thread and buttons and often stayed to chat. Wooden drawers held needles, ribbons, and tailor’s chalk. Beside them, the sewing machine’s pedal moved up and down for hours, setting the pace of the day. The door was always opening: customers, neighbors, friends. Abbash was a meeting point. We grew up here, and I still remember Grandma Mery calling from the kitchen: “Shall we make panzerotti tonight?” or Grandpa asking: “Soup?” It was a lively home, always something on the stove: orecchiette, focaccia, panzerotti, eggplants, vegetables. It was a place of work—meals often left unfinished when someone knocked at the shop door. Afternoons were spent chatting, snacking on fava beans and almonds, while the stone ceiling above held the sounds of the sewing machine and the scent of the fireplace on winter evenings. Today, the house has been lovingly restored, preserving its simple, authentic soul of stone, silence, and memory. The spaces are cozy and intimate, right in the heart of the White City, near the main square—perfect for those who want to experience Ostuni at a relaxed pace, among winding streets, sunsets, olive trees, and the sea. After a day at the beach or exploring the historic center, you can unwind in the small hot tub—a peaceful corner that makes your stay even more special. Abbash da Mery is a house that has truly lived. Today, its door is open to anyone who wants to pause and, even for just a few days, become part of its story.
